Vice Chairman
Mark Tolliver ill70
Retired CEO of Plamida, Inc.
Mr. Tolliver has been in the technology field for over 40 years. Tolliver started his career at HP where he spent 16 years. While at HP, Tolliver held technical and management positions in Test & Measurement and Information Technology. Tolliver led the acquisition of Apollo Computer, HP’s largest acquisition to date at that time, resulting in the formation of HP’s workstation business unit and the introduction of a generation of advanced computing products. After leaving HP, Tolliver joined venture-funded MasPar Inc., a pioneer in massively parallel computing. In 1993, Tolliver was recruited as the VP of Market Development for Sun Microsystems Inc., at that time the world’s largest network computer company and later pioneer in Java and the internet, with revenues exceeding $4B annually. While at Sun, Tolliver led a number of product initiatives including as President of Sun’s Consumer and Embedded business which developed small footprint Java platforms for what we would now term IoT ( internet of things), with products for automotive, mobile, consumer electronics, and embedded industrial applications. Later Tolliver led iPlanet, a joint venture with Netscape, which combined both Netscape’s and Sun’s products into the industry’s first comprehensive internet infrastructure software platform (web, application server, identity, mail, messaging, and commerce products). Under Tolliver’s tenure as President of iPlanet, revenue grew rapidly to over $600M/yr. Additionally, while at iPlanet, Tolliver initiated a review of Netscape software to document intellectual property ownership, a task requiring thousands of hours of development and legal time. During this time, the use of open-source software was rapidly becoming a widespread practice within development projects, and licensing options for open-source software were proliferating. As a result, first commercial software companies and later all development organizations recognized the legal exposure that results from the use of open source and other third-party software and began to take steps similar to those at iPlanet. Post iPlanet, Tolliver returned to Sun Microsystem as Executive VP of Marketing and Corporate Development. In this position, Tolliver led negotiations with Microsoft which successfully resolved legal disputes regarding the use of Java technology. This paved the way for the expansion of Java to additional operating systems and mega-vendors. In 2005, based on Tolliver’s extensive technology and IP background, he was recruited as CEO of Palamida Inc., an early-stage company backed by venture firms Hummer Winblad and Walden Venture Capital . Palamida developed a special-purpose search engine designed to simplify the task of identifying open-source software already present within software projects and reporting on the licensing risk associated with those findings. While at Palamida, Tolliver worked closely with industry analysts to define a new product category, Software Composition Analysis, and expanded the product functionality to include the identification of security vulnerabilities as well as more extensive IP license analysis, therefore greatly increasing the value of the Palamida application. Palamida’s 500+ customers included Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe, HP, Airbus, Sony, Wells Fargo, etc. among others. Palamida reached profitability mid-way through Tolliver’s 11-year tenure and remained that way until October 2016 when the company was acquired by Flexera Software Inc. Tolliver served on the board of Intalio Inc. for 10+ years prior to its acquisition by ServiceMax in 2015 and currently serves on the board of the non-profit Triangle Education Foundation. Mr. Tolliver holds degrees from the University of Illinois (EE), and the University of Chicago (MBA). He and his wife Cindy live in Saratoga, California.
