Randy Kerns is the chief technology officer for ProStor Systems in Boulder Colorado.  In his role as Chief Technology Officer, Randy drives the company’s strategic direction for products and technology.  As an industry veteran and former storage industry analyst, Mr. Kerns has spent over 35 years in the computer industry helping storage companies design and develop storage system products for their markets as well as advising technical professionals on how to build the best storage infrastructures to streamline their business processes.

Prior to joining ProStor Systems, Mr. Kerns served as an industry analyst covering storage and storage management software including SAN and NAS analysis.  As a senior partner with the Evaluator Group, he was responsible for product analysis, product strategy, and company evaluation. While there, he became recognized in the storage industry for assisting major end-user clients in developing their storage strategies as well as supporting storage system vendors with their product and technology roadmaps to meet the customer needs in the future.

Mr. Kerns spent many years in executive level product strategy and design positions. He was vice president of storage strategy and planning at Sun Microsystems; he developed disk and tape systems for mainframe attachment at IBM and StorageTek; he designed disk systems for attachment to open systems and proprietary computer platforms at Fujitsu and Tandem Computers; and he developed tape and disk systems for two start-up companies.

Mr. Kerns earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Missouri at Rolla and a master’s degree in engineering computer science from the University of Colorado.

An educator and presenter, Mr. Kerns has written numerous industry articles and papers and is the author of Planning a Storage Strategy, a new book that offers step-by-step guidance on how to build an information storage strategy as part of a larger business process and most recently is the author of Information Archiving – Economics and Compliance, which is the first book of its kind to explore archiving of information in depth.  Mr. Kerns has regularly taught classes on storage technology in the United States and Europe.

Scott E. Bova, CFRE currently serves as the President of the Triangle Education Foundation. Scott joined the Triangle Foundation staff in June of 2000. As President, Bova is responsible for the daily operations of the Foundation and all avenues of income.

Previously, Bova served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Phi Kappa Theta National Foundation, where he joined staff in 1995 as the Director of Alumni Affairs and Development and was elevated to the position of COO in January of 1997.

Bova received a Bachelors degree in Sports Marketing and Media Relations from Ohio University. During his tenure at Ohio, he was employed by the Vice President for Administration, and was involved primarily in the development, planning, funding and construction of the new 24 million dollar student recreation facility. Following his graduation Bova went on to work for the Detroit Lions in their Marketing Department.

Currently residing in Carmel, Indiana, Bova is active in the Indianapolis community. He is a former member of the Downtown Optimist Club and a current member of the Indiana Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, in addition, he has volunteered for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships, Big Ten Basketball Championships, Indy Reads Adult Literacy Program and various other special projects. Bova is currently an Indiana State licensed baseball official and spends his spring and summer umpiring competitive NCAA and high school baseball throughout the state.

He is a past chair of The NIC Foundations Seminar, Operations Chair for Indiana Fund Raising Day and Co-Chair of the Indiana Philanthropy Awards Dinner. Bova is currently chairing of the AFP Indiana Chapter Marketing Committee. He has presented for several groups and seminars on alumni relations, volunteer management, board operations, and basic fund raising. He earned his Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation in the fall of 2002.

Brother Ver comes to the Foundation after a very successful career with Ford Motor Company where he served as a Ford vice president and chief executive and chief operating officer of the Ford-managed, business entity – Automotive Components Holdings, LLC – formed to oversee 23 component and manufacturing plants and facilities in the U.S. and Mexico after their transfer from Visteon Corp.

Ver previously served Ford as vice president, Advanced & Manufacturing Engineering, a position he had held since January 2000. His organization developed product program technology and advanced manufacturing processes and ensured alignment between product creation and manufacturing operations.  Ver also served as executive director, Ford Vehicle Operations, for two years.

Ver joined Ford Motor Company in 1972 as a manufacturing process engineer at the Mt. Clemens, MI Paint Plant. For the next 21 years, he held engineering and production positions in paint, vinyl, plastics and transmission operations, including plant manager posts at Batavia, OH Transmission Plant and Milan, MI Plastics Plant.

Mr. Ver holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in manufacturing management from the Ohio State University.  In addition to volunteering with the Foundation he serves on the boards of Goodwill Industries of Detroit and Arbor Hospice.  He and his wife, Bernadette, reside in Brighton, Michigan. 

Robert (Bob) Benziger ill61, Treasurer

Mr. Benziger is a 1961 initiate from the University of Illinois where he earned his BSEE in 1965 and his J.D. in 1967. While at Illinois, he served as the Triangle Chapter Secretary.

His professional experience includes positions as Patent Attorney at The Bendix Corporation, Patent and Trademark Attorney at Ford Motor Company and Trademark Counsel, Senior Attorney, Assistant General Counsel and Associate General Counsel for Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Although officially retired, Mr. Benziger continues to serve as Founding Director and Secretary for the Baxter Credit Union, as a member of the Board of Visitors at the U of I College of Law, and as a volunteer at Highland Park Hospital.

Mr. Benziger and his wife, Marla Kim, reside in Deerfield, Illinois. They have two sons, Keith and Seth, and three grandchildren.

Donald E. Knebel is a partner in Barnes & Thornburg LLP, resident in the Indianapolis, Indiana office. He is co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department and chair of BTech, the firm’s Business and Technology Group.

Mr. Knebel's practice concentrates on cases involving claims of patent infringement, violations of the antitrust laws, unfair competition and trademark infringement, improper termination of distributors and sales representatives, and violation of non-competition agreements. He has been involved in cases in more than 20 states and has tried cases to verdict in eight states. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America (commercial litigation and intellectual property) since the first edition in 1983. He has been identified by Chambers USA’s America’s Leading Lawyers for Business as “the best in Indiana for patent litigation.” A survey by Mondaq, an English company, identified him as one of the most recommended lawyers in the world in the field of patent law.

Mr. Knebel has lectured widely to many types of groups on assuring compliance with antitrust laws and related topics. He is also a frequent speaker on the use of technology, including animation, in patent cases. Mr. Knebel has written numerous articles, several published in recognized journals, involving antitrust laws and the protection of intellectual property. He is coauthor of the Indiana chapter of State Antitrust Practice and Statutes, published by the American Bar Association.

Mr. Knebel received a B.S.E.E. with highest distinction from Purdue University in 1968 and worked from 1968 to 1971 as an electronics design engineer for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. He received his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1974 and joined Barnes & Thornburg that same year. Mr. Knebel is admitted to practice in Indiana and before the First, Third, Sixth, Seventh and Federal Circuits, as well as several district courts.
  
Dr. Charles (Chuck) Bowman ps56

Charles H. Bowman is Professor Emeritus of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, and a retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BP America, the US operating arm of British Petroleum. He is also currently serving as Interim Dean and CEO of Texas A&M University at Qatar, the university’s branch campus in the State of Qatar, and is a member of the Joint Advisory Board for the branch campus.

While at Texas A&M, Bowman was Professor and Head of the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering, the nation’s #1-ranked program. During that time, he also held the prestigious Robert L. Whiting Endowed Chair in petroleum engineering.

Bowman spent 36 years in the international oil industry, including assignments as Managing Director of BP Australia, General Manager – Europe for BP Oil International, President, Old Ben Coal Co., and President, Gulf Refining and Marketing Company.

He is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received a BS degree from Pennsylvania State University, and MS and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University, all in petroleum engineering. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State in 1996. He is also a member of the Texas A&M Petroleum Engineering Academy of Distinguished Graduates, and a member of the Triangle Fraternity Wall of Fame.

He is married to Lynn A. Holleran, and has five grown children, plus three grandchildren. Hobbies and interests include model railroading, antique furniture restoration and woodworking, as well as the maintenance of the horse and cattle farm where he and Lynn live.

Dr. Bowman is an honorary director of the American Petroleum Institute. He is a former director of National City Corporation, former Trustee of Case Western Reserve University, former Chairman of Trustees of the Cleveland Ballet, and a former Director of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas. Prior to retirement from BP, he had also been a Director and Treasurer of the American Petroleum Institute, and an Advisory Board member at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C.

Retired Admiral Chiogioji is a 1961 graduate of Purdue, has received an MBA from the University of Hawaii and a DBA from George Washington University. Admiral Chiogioji has served on the Triangle Foundation Board of Directors since 1996.

In addition to Triangle, he serves as Chairman of the Board of the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation, as a member of the Board of the Japanese American National Museum and as a member of the Seabee Memorial Scholarship Association.

Retired Admiral Chiogioji currently resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife, Pallas. He has two adult children, Wendy and Alan, and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Amanda, Kathryn, and Christopher.

Eugene (Gene) Cummings nu58

An avid pilot, Mr. Cummings has had a diverse career in aviation, law and engineering. He is a 1963 electrical engineering graduate of Northwestern University and a 1970 graduate of Loyola University Law School. In addition to his law career in the area of patent and related litigation, Mr. Cummings has worked for Zenith Radio Corporation and United Airlines.

Mr. Cummings is also a founder and managing partner of Telesonics Systems, LLP, a developer of U.S. stereo sound systems for television; Sequoia Properties, Inc., an aircraft management company; and IsoClear Inc. an optical research company. In addition to these corporate positions, he serves as a Trustee of the John G. Shedd Aquarium.

Randy currently does consulting in technology procurement. vendor management and information technology strategy. He was previously with the Exelon Corporation, formally known as Commonwealth Edison. Randy is a 1968 Mathematics graduate of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. While at Rose, Randy was a founding father of the new chapter.

Randy has served as a member of Triangle Fraternity National Council and has served as National President. Randy has been on the Foundation Board as a director since the mid-1970’s, most recently as Vice President of Development. Randy was elected to his first 2 year term of president in August of 2001.

Randy lives in Chicago with his wife Sandy and three children.

Wayne F. Echelberger, Jr., Ph. D., P.E., DEE sdm54

Dr. Echelberger, Jr. is a retired Professor of Civil and Environmental engineering at the University of South Florida. He earned his B.S. at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he was initiated into Triangle in 1954. He earned his M.S.E., M.P.H. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Prior to joining the University of South Florida, Dr. Echelberger was Professor and Chairman of Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso, and a member of the teaching and research faculties at Indiana University, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan.

Dr. Echelberger received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003 from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He is a past member of the Technology Accreditation Commission; Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology; Board of Directors, Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors; and the Board of Trustees, American Academy of Environmental Engineers. He has also served on national research study committees for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

He continues his involvement with engineering education through service as an evaluator of Civil and Environmental Engineering programs for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, a member of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Board at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and participates on grant review panels for the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Echelberger has two children, a dentist in Kentucky and a CPA in Texas, and five grandchildren.

J. Steve Flannigan rose62

Steve Flannigan graduated from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in 1968 with a BSEE. After graduation he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories as a Member of Technical Staff.

In 1971, Flannigan joined Texas Instruments as a Senior Member of Technical Staff. He was heavily involved with the early work in the use of early microprocessor technology to replace large combinational logic circuits with firmware-based control systems. This resulted in several patents on highly portable lightweight thermal printing data terminals, impact printers and bubble memory based data systems.

In 1982 Steve joined with a small team who left TI to found Compaq Computer Corporation, which developed the first truly compatible PC to the IBM PC. Flannigan was responsible for developing the compatibility software strategy, creating the first compatible BIOS, operating system (MS-DOS) and BASIC software, establishing partnerships with all the leading PC software developers at the time to create and support software on both the IBM PC and the Compaq PC. This strategy allowed Compaq to become the fastest growing company at that time and achieve $1B in sales faster than any company before. He helped develop the first Industry Standard Server, the Compaq SystemPro. This allowed Compaq to grow beyond the desktop areas into the backend servers that powered large corporations and established early market leadership. Steve also was responsible for the worldwide alliance between Compaq and Microsoft, who grew up together in the PC industry and maintained close ties throughout the PC revolution.

Austin will be serving as the Undergraduate Director to the Board. He will be asked to provide valuable input on current campus life, undergraduate engineering education demands and the feedback on current programs funded by the Foundation.  In addition, he will serve as a full board member with a vote and expected to provide comments and evaluation of traditional governance issues such as budgeting, strategic planning and policy development.  He was selected from an impressive pool of nominees to serve a one year term on the Board

Mr. McShane is the Chief Executive Officer of The McShane Companies, an integrated real estate development and design/build firm headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois. He also serves as the President of The McShane Foundation. Mr. McShane received his BCE from Marquette University in 1968. He serves on the Marquette University Engineering Advisory Board and was the recipient of the ‘Professional Achievement Award’ from the College of Engineering in 2003. Mr. McShane also received the prestigious Award for Excellence from the Chicago Chapter of NAIOP in 2002. He serves on the Education Foundation Board of the Builders Association (AGC Chicago Chapter), is the Chairman of the Planning Commission for the Village of Bannockburn, Illinois, and serves as the 2005/2006 President of the Chicago Building Congress. Mr. McShane is also a member of AGC, ASCE, SIOR, NAIOP and AIRE.

Mr. McShane resides in Bannockburn, Illinois with his wife, Kelly. They have five children – Katie, Dan, Molly, Anne and Michael – and three grandchildren.

Dr. Melsa is currently the Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. A distinguished scholar, an award-winning educator, and a visionary corporate leader, Dr. James L. Melsa served as dean of the Iowa State University College of Engineering from 1995 to 2004. Previously, he spent 11 years at Tellabs Inc., Lisle, Ill, a telecommunications equipment manufacturer, including appointments as vice president of strategic planning and advanced technology, vice president of research and development, and vice president of strategic quality and process management.

Melsa also was on the faculty at the University of Notre Dame for 11 years, serving as professor and chair of the electrical engineering department. He also has worked as a faculty member at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, and the University of Arizona, Tucson. During his years as an academic, Melsa conducted significant research on control and estimation theory, speech encoding, and digital signal processing; directed 20 masters theses and 16 Ph.D. dissertations; earned recognition as one of the nation's outstanding electrical engineering professors; and authored or co-authored 125 publications and 12 books.

He was named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 1978 and received that group's Third Millennium Medal in 2000. He has previously served as President of the IEEE Control Systems Society and President of Eta Kappa Nu, the national electrical and computer engineering honorary. He was named a fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education in 2006 and was the 2007-2008 President of ASEE. He has an extensive record of service to national and international groups, including the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association, the Iowa Business Council, and the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (past member of the Board of Examiners and the Board of Overseers).

Melsa received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State (1960) and his M.S. (1962), and Ph.D. (1965) degrees from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Mr. Miller is Chairman and President of SLM Discovery Ventures, Inc., a company formed in September 2002 pursuing commercial ventures in support of volunteerism, social outreach, and higher education academic achievement. SLM Discovery Ventures, Inc. is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Miller is the retired Chairman of the Board of Directors, President and CEO of Shell Oil Company, holding that position from July 1999 until his retirement on September 1, 2002.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Miller graduated with a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois. He began his career with Shell in 1967 at Shell's Deer Park refinery near Houston. After various field, head office and overseas assignments in manufacturing and marketing, he was named Vice President of Refining and Marketing for Shell Oil in 1988.

In 1992, Mr. Miller joined the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies management team in London with responsibility for global supply and marketing. In 1996, he was named a Managing Director of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and a Managing Director of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies.

Active in both the business and not for profit communities, Mr. Miller serves on the boards of a number of local and national organizations and institutions. He is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Greater Houston Partnership, a business organization including Chamber of Commerce, business development, and trade representation for 2,200 businesses. He is a Trustee and Vice Chairman for the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast and is the recently elected Chairman of the Points of Light Foundation, the nation's primary enabler of volunteer service.

Mr. Miller is a member of the Board of Applied Materials, Inc. based in Santa Clara, California and a member of the Advisory Board of Momentum Equity, a venture capital company based in Dallas, Texas. He is a Director of the University of Illinois Foundation and an associate member of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Foundation Board in Houston. He serves on Rice University's Board of Trustees and on the Board of Advisors for Rice's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. Mr. Miller is also a Director of the Texas Southern University Foundation.

Mr. Miller and his wife, Sheila, have two children.

Gordon was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and moved to Detroit with his parents in 1950. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and of Georgia State University with a Masters of Business Administration. Gordon served as a pilot in the United States Air Force from 1966 to August 1977, spending a year in Vietnam during the Vietnam War receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. He has been an Investment Banker, specializing in financing of public projects since 1971, beginning with his family owned firm until its sale in 1995 and with Morgan Keegan & Company, Inc. since. Board positions include chairman of the Finance Committee and President of Southern Polytechnic State University Foundation. He has also been chairman of his church finance committee, member of the building committee and chairman of the administrative council. He has been married to the former Malinda Delle Jolley since 1971.

Michael (Mike) O’Connor marq74

Mr. O’Connor has been in the construction management business for the past 25 years. He received his BSEE from Marquette in 1975 and a MSEE from the University of Colorado in 1982. He is currently involved in raising and training guide dogs for the blind, and both youth soccer and youth hockey.

Mr. O’Connor, his wife, Cheryl, and two children, Patrick and Caitlin, currently live in a suburb of Washington D.C.

Mr. Wedbush serves on various for-profit boards including the University of Cincinnati Foundation.

He, and his wife, Jean, currently reside in Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego County, California. They have three children, Gary, Eric and Leigh Ann.

Mr. Sudheimer has represented Triangle successfully for many years in the interfraternal world by serving as a National Interfraternity Conference Director and President, and as a National Interfraternity Foundation Director and Chairman. He has also served Triangle as a Council member, National President and TEF Director. Mr. Sudheimer is a recipient of the Triangle Service Key and the NIC Gold Medal.

He retired after more than 30 years in advanced development planning with the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Sudheimer is a 1956 engineering graduate of the University of Minnesota. He currently resides in Hawaii with his wife, Barbara.

Bob is a 1958 chemical engineering graduate from Armour. He currently is President of RBR@Vision, a consulting firm that he founded in 1996 to provide services to corporate on international strategic and marketing plans with an emphasis on international strategic alliances as well as international technology assessments and technology transfer. Bob has served Triangle as a member of the Foundation board and as its President.

Bob also holds a masters and doctorate in gas technology from Illinois Institute of Technology. Prior to founding RBR@Vision, Bob served as Executive Vice President of Gas Research Institute.

Bob resides in Chicago with his wife Maryann. He has two children, John and Debra, and four grandchildren, Alex, David, Christopher, and Maggie.
